Notes on the back of the Certificate read: Certificate issued to Mrs. Margaret Fleming Varley Roberts.First wife of Joseph Varley Roberts MC devout Christian and promoter of overseas relations via CMS in Northern Nigeria. She pre-deceased him in 1942 (corrected from 1949) but he carried on her passion and married Gertrude Sawyer who worked with him in Northern Nigeria in the 1950’s.
Photograph 05: Photograph in buff card sleeve (sold by H. Ward, 2 Station Street, West Croyden) taken in Switzerland in the 1920’s. Notes on the back: Born December 1885 Stanningley near Leeds, Yorkshire and died September 1988 at Loughton, Essex September 17th. Joseph Varley Roberts MC - Centre with moustache Switzerland 1920’s (in party his 1st wife Margaret Brodie formerly Fleming). Pink Post-it inside: Lived in Avonbury, London. Margaret Fleming (nee) Brodie married June 1915 to Joseph Varley Roberts and pre-deceased him in April 1949.
